ARA THEATER
ARA MEDIA

We are a NYC based, multi-disciplinary company, and our mission is to create original work that marries the absurd traditions of 20th century European theater and theater-making with pressing contemporary themes. Our company is under fiscal sponsorship by The Field.
Most recently, ARA Theater together with The Drilling Company produced a reading of LAKEPLAY, written by ARA Theaters co-founder, Drew Valins.
ARA theater has produced and performed in collaboration with New York City based company Clowns Ex Machina where the production MY BIRTHDAY performed in New York City, Rhode Island, and Canada. ARA theater has also recently collaborated on a performance research based in clown, with the company ImproSupreme in Paris, France.

2050.
A 10 minute short fiction film: A love letter to the ocean and memoriam to the vast inhabitants of its waters.
“The truth will rise”. The year is 2050 - a self-isolating, middle-aged man named K, and his small fish grapple with hope in and apocalyptical world.
This short is an examination of human belief, choice, and awareness in our era of increasing climate catastrophe. Inspired by the absurdist writer Daniil Kharms, the band Sigur Ros, and the majestic whales of our oceans.

MY BIRTHDAY
A new work
in collaboration with
Clown Ex Machina.
What does Birthday really mean?
Michaela's work is solo-poetic-clown-theatre: It incorporates an eccentric, tragic character, situation, object, costume, sound, dance, song, and stage design. The audience follows a female clown as she prepares and celebrates her birthday. We all have birthdays, and this ritual proves to be a deep vein for theatrical and clownical inspiration. Expectations about this rite of passage vary by personality, age, and culture. This piece compels the audience to reflect on their own birthdays and what they signify.

SPLITT BILL//CLOWN EXPLORATION
SPLITT BILL (with two t's): Swedish clowns are keeping it together. Poetic..with lots of food for thought, including construction tape and Scandinavian/French/American flair!
A collaboration between Michaela Lind (ARA Theater) and Caspar Schjelbred (IMPROSUPREME)

Caspar's piece is a one-man variety show, an existential and absurd comic performance with a considerable dose of clowning and mime. Scandinavian functionalism meets French flair as our hero transforms between all kinds of characters, demons and other likely –or unlikely– figments of his imagination. Strung between freedom and necessity, each performance is unique in its more or less scripted improvisations…
Audiences have found the work playful, earnest, and universal.
